DRIVER PROFILE RIDING ON FOUR WHEELS...

OR RACING ON TWO? NO CONTEST!

indeed, and whose ambition is to be World Motocross and Supercross Champi- on.

Ashley Greedy at work

This month we pay a visit to the Rhondda Valley in south Wales, to chat to a young taxi driver with racy ambi- tions. No, nothing like that... we’re talking

about the extracurricu- lar interests of 20-year old Ashley Greedy, who has been totally engulfed in the sport of motocross racing for a very long time

Ashley also happens to drive taxis for his day job. He works with his parents at their family-owned company called A G Taxis and Talbot Cabs. But let’s start at the beginning: Ashley was born in Tonyrefail, Rhondda in 1990, and collected a handful of solid GCSE’s at Tonyrefail Comprehensive. He used to help his dad part-time to clean the taxis, and also lent a hand at some of the simple repair work on them.

So it was a natural progression for Ashley to start driving for the family firm, most of whose customers are regulars, as they are given a friendly and reliable 24/7/365 serv- ice. That’s not to say that the company would not wish to expand their customer base with new busi- ness! – wouldn’t everyone, especially in these financially restrained times. Ashley is amongst ten drivers altogether on the A G/Talbot circuit; he mainly does school runs, and he’s still contributing to the repair side of the busi- ness as well as taking emergency jobs if everyone is booked up. His Fiat Doblo is wheelchair accessible, so he can accommo- date disabled passengers in situ when called upon to do so. The company is well known in the area so they’re always busy.

SPEED DEMON

So what’s with Ashley and motocross? Well, he had his first bike

when he was really young, and has been motocross racing from the age of nine, starting out by attend- ing club meetings. From that time he raced in as many major events as the organisers could fit in. At the ripe old age of 13 Ashley won the BYMX British Youth Championship on a Talbot Cabs Racing- backed Kawasaki 85 small wheel bike, and then won it again in 2006 on the 250 Team green Kawasaki. This is one serious pastime! Ashley rides his bike every week- end; if there’s no racing on, then his father will take him over the tops of the mountains around the Welsh Valleys to prac- tise with the ‘Tip Champions’. His ded- ication to the sport is known by all who are involved locally, and his family throw them- selves into supporting him at every event – both his brother Josh and sister Megan sup- port him as much as his parents.

Ashley has succeeded at motocross not only

in Wales but also Eng- land, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Eire, France, Holland, Bel- gium, Denmark and America. He’s serious in his pursuits, and intends to be top dog in his field. He has a championship list as long as your arm, and his most recent achievement was to have won the German SX2 Supercross Championship in Jan- uary.

In the same

month he partnered with Adam Chatfield to race at two Super- cross rounds at London and Liverpool for the Maxxis LPE Kawasaki team.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, as they say, it’s back to earning some dosh... as Ashley says, “I’m still flat out on the bikes, but in the mean- time I’ll get back in my taxi and do the school runs.” For real motocross afi- cionados, you can check out Ashley’s progress on his web- site: www.talbotcabs racing.com.

Stand back and admire! The guy’s def- initely going places... at rather a fast pace.
