ROCHDALE DRIVERS TAKE TAXI RIDE TO HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE
Taxi drivers queued up to get advice on how to stay fit and healthy at the wheel.
More than 20 drivers stopped by Falinge Community Hub in January for the launch of the Health On Hire scheme.
It is aimed at encour- aging the 1,500 drivers working across the borough to improve their health and fitness by eating healthily, doing more exercise and feeling safer at work.
Belfield taxi driver Khalid Mahmood told the Rochdale Observ-
er: “The help is there so it is up to us to come and get it and get our- selves fit and healthy. “I’m planning to cut down on salty foods and takeaways, con- centrate on eating more fruit and veg and go to the gym to get my belly back in.” Rochdale Council’s cabinet member for adult care and health, Cllr Linda Robinson, said: “I am delighted to see so many drivers keen to make the small changes that add up to a healthier, happier life and willing to encourage families
and friends to do the same.”
The Health On Hire scheme was launched after a survey of 130 drivers found that a lot of drivers do not exer- cise enough due to work, eat unhealthily and have junk food because of shift pat- terns and had been threatened verbally or physically while work- ing.
Alongside blood pres- sure and cholesterol testing, drivers were given recipes for life on the go and tried exercise routines spe- cially created for them.

SHEFFIELD MUM FURIOUS OVER CABBIE’S ‘ALCOHOL BAN’
A mum from Sheffield was left “gobsmacked” when a taxi driver refused to let her travel in his black cab because she was car- rying a pack of beer. Alison Dawson, 46, attempted to board with her bags of shop- ping outside the Co-op in the city centre. But she said the driver spotted her 12-pack of Cobra beer and told
her: “You’re not get- ting in this cab.” Alison was allowed to travel in another taxi without any problems. Alison told the Sheffield Star: “I was panicking, I had to get home because my son wasn’t feeling well. I think it was because of his faith. I’m not xeno- phobic, but if he’s a taxi driver, that’s his job.”
“The next driver was absolutely fine. I rang the council and they advised me to put it into a complaint.” Sheffield Council chief licensing officer Clive Stephenson said: “We would not comment on this particular inci- dent as we are still awaiting Mrs Daw- son’s complaint and it is, therefore, an ongo- ing investigation.”
BASILDON CABBIE’S KERB ROW BLOCKS PATH WORKS
A taxi driver brought footpath repair works to a halt in a one-day stand-off.
Stuart Cullum, 36, hit a loose kerb in Ardleigh, Basildon, last August, while parking his nine- seater taxi.
It caused £145 dam- age to a tyre and left him out of action for a busy Friday night. He claimed compen- sation from Essex County Council for lost
earnings, but when this was refused, he took direct action to highlight the situation. Mr Cullum told the Southend Evening Echo: “I decided to block the road in Ardleigh so the work- man could not carry out any improvements on the stretch of road. “The claim was not about the money.
It’s
about people being safe on the streets.
“How can Essex County Council expect not to make a refund when it was not my fault?”
The taxi driver, who works for A & B Taxis in Basildon, decided to make his protest after he was told the only way he could pursue the issue was through the small claims court. Essex County Council is investigating the issue.
