LICENCES SUSPENDED IN TAXIS CRACKDOWN IN BRADFORD
The licences of six cabbies have been suspended in a clamp- down on rogue taxi drivers in Bradford. Police are now urging residents to help them catch unlicensed taxi drivers following the recent operation. Officers and staff from Bradford Council’s hackney carriage enforcement team completed licensing checks on more than 38 vehicles in the Eccleshill area over two days.
Aside from those licences which were suspended, police also gave seven driv- ers advisory notices for more minor mat- ters which need to be rectified for them to comply with regula-
tions.
Insp Pete Tuff, of Eccleshill Neighbour- hood Policing Team (NPT), told the York- shire Post: “We are aware of residents’ concerns about a minority of licensed vehicles and continue to work with them and our lawful drivers to make sure the few who do try and oper- ate dangerously or without licences are stopped.
“The vast majority of drivers we spoke to on the night were fully licensed which should be reassuring for resi- dents using their services.”
The operation follows a series of checks car- ried out to monitor taxi drivers in Eccleshill
and North Bradford over the last 12 months, following complaints from resi- dents about issues such as the use of loud horns at night. Police have stressed that while the majority of taxi operators in Eccleshill are perfectly law abiding, they want to reassure residents they are keeping an eye on the issue to discourage any rogue drivers from operating frequently in the area. The authorities also continue to monitor drivers in the area fol- lowing reports of wanted criminals using cabs in Eccleshill last year to unknowingly pick them up after they had committed offences.

Nine people were arrested during an operation to clamp down on criminal and antisocial use of vehi- cles in Castleford. The action was launched after resi- dents raised concerns about speeding and claimed would-be thieves had been driv- ing around hunting for and stealing scrap metal.
Castleford Neighbour- hood Policing Team (NPT) organised a multi-agency opera- tion involving Wake- field Council, West Yorkshire Trading Stan- dards, British Trans-
port Police, VOSA and HM Revenue and Cus- toms. Police arrested nine people for offences including possession of an offensive weapon, possession of drugs with intent to supply and criminal damage. Officers stopped 31 vehicles and issued five speeding tickets, as well as notices for other traffic offences including defective tyres and seat belt offences.
HM Revenue and Cus- toms checked for illegal fuel in 62 vehi- cles, with no offences found.
A total of 33 hackney carriages and PHVs were stopped, resulting in Wakefield Council and VOSA issuing four immediate prohibition notices, seven delayed and eight vehicle rectifi- cation notices. Five benefit fraud offences were also identified. Insp David Bugg, of Castleford NPT, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “We are pleased with the positive results achieved. ‘“We will not tolerate antisocial and criminal use of vehicles in the area. This is one of a number of operations planned to tackle it.”

FAULTS FOUND IN THE MAJORITY OF SELBY TAXIS
Police conducting a check on the roadwor- thiness of taxis in Selby found 19 out of 21 vehi- cles had defects. Three of the taxis were ordered off the road immediately in the four-hour operation on Friday 25 January, though two were later fixed and allowed to continue. Two others were given seven days to rectify problems and inspec- tors found 12 more
cars would have failed an MoT. Road Policing Officer, TC David Hunter, told the BBC News: “Mem- bers of the public have a right to expect that the taxis they use are safe and roadwor- thy and that the drivers are properly licensed.
“While many taxi driv- ers do maintain their vehicles, I am disap- pointed by the number of vehicles with
defects, whether minor or more serious.” Tim Grogan, Licensing Enforcement Officer for Selby District Coun- cil, said the results compared favourably with other areas. He added: “Though I am disappointed that five of the 21 vehicles examined were issued with prohibition no- tices, I am relieved that only one was removed immediately from the road.”
CHESTER TAXI DRIVERS TARGETED IN SPOT CHECKS
A crackdown on taxi drivers who flout the laws has taken place in Chester.
Operation Gold which focused on both licensed private hire and hackney carriage vehicles involved Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire Police, VOSA and Her Majesty’s Rev- enue and Customs Road Fuel Testing Unit. During the operation 53 vehicles were inspected to make
sure that they were not using red diesel. All were found to be com- pliant and using fuel with the correct duty paid on it.
However 14 of the 28 vehicles inspected for their roadworthiness and compliance of their vehicle licence conditions were found with defects. Eight were found to have serious enough defects to be issued with prohibition notices by VOSA offi-
cers that require the licence holder to immediately rectify the problems. Cllr Lynn Riley, execu- tive member for community and envi- ronment, told the Chester Leader: “Operation Gold is extremely important because it reassures the public that in the licensing system there are random, unan- nounced safety checks as well as rou- tine inspections.”
