MEMB NewsER Upcoming IIMS events

In-person and remote MCA approved tonnage training on 23/24 September 2025

Don’t miss this opportunity. IIMS rarely offers the chance to learn the practicalities of tonnage measurements in person. But first, on 23 September from 15.00 to 18.00, IIMS will present online only Part I: Tonnage theory training. This is available to IIMS members and non-members too and provides an essential knowledge base into the theory of tonnage measurement and what’s involved.

The following day (24 September 2025), for those who are available to travel to Itchenor Sailing Club in the UK, Part II will be delivered face-to-face. Three boats will be measured under the guidance of experienced IIMS surveyors, who will lead the session. If you are unable to travel to the UK for this face-to-face evet, you can complete Part II remotely by recording and submitting your video evidence for scrutineering at your convenience.

IIMS four-day Practical Surveying course 1-4 December

Are you new to the marine surveying profession, or do you have limited surveying experience and need more knowledge? Perhaps you’re wondering whether you’re inspecting the boat correctly and if your reports have enough detail to meet modern day expectations? If so, the third iteration of the popular IIMS Practical Surveying Course could be just the ticket for you.

This four-day residential programme being held at the Boatbuilding Academy in Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK aims to offer delegates practical, hands-on surveying experience.

For the first three days, IIMS senior and experienced surveyors will assist and guide you in inspecting and surveying three different boats, as well as discussing toolkit requirements and how to use them. The surveyors are also on hand throughout the three days to answer any questions you may have about inspections, or the surveying profession in general.

The final morning will be dedicated to an in-depth lecture on report writing, which will offer tips and advice, delivered in person by IIMS CEO, Mike Schwarz. The programme concludes with an assessed test where you will write a scaled down report on one of the vessels you inspected during the course. This is done via an online platform and should be completed at a later date once you are back home and have had time to take in all you have learned.
