Having rested this programme for a couple years, IIMS is bringing back its Practical Boat Building Course by popular demand later in 2026.
Numbers for this exceptional learning opportunity are strictly limited to just 8 students, so please act promptly to reserve your place.
Who should attend? - Students who are studying to be a marine surveyor
- Marine surveyors who are new into the profession
This 5 day residential event is being held at the Boat Building Academy facility in Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK from 7-11 December 2026.
Students who are enrolled in the IIMS Yacht & Small Craft Professional Qualification may claim attendance at the course as one module.
The Boat Building Academy tutors are highly experienced and will host the event on behalf of IIMS. The content is based on two days of wooden boat theory, to include discussions on faults in wooden boats and typical issues, followed by three days of FRP/GRP with some practical work, including hand lay-ups and repairs, and will cover faults in FRP/GRP, including osmosis. Faults in wooden boats and osmosis were both mentioned after the last course in 2022 as areas where the students would like more information, so the Boat Building Academy will focus time on these subjects.
In brief, here’s what we have on each day: Day 1
Monday 7 December 2026 - Introductions and wooden hulls
Day 2
Tuesday 8 December 2026 - Wooden hulls and faults and issues
Day 3
Wednesday 9 December 2026 - Fibre reinforced plastics
Day 4 Thursday 10 December 2026
- Fibre reinforced plastics and practical activities
Day 5
Friday 11 December 2026 - Fibre reinforced plastics practical
An online test will be made available to students to complete after the event.
The cost of the 5-day course is just £1,200 (no VAT and payable upon booking). Accommodation and subsistence are at your own cost. IIMS is happy to help with accommodation arrangements. If you have any questions, please email Vicki Lozidies at education@
iims.org.uk or call on +44 23 9238 5223 during normal working hours.
