Q8. What message would you like to give to others who may be thinking about undertaking some mentoring and passing on their skills and knowledge?
That it is rewarding, gives me satisfaction and I feel like I’m creating and leaving my legacy. I have a good reputation and this carries onto to my mentees through the network. I take pride in my work and

I instill this in my mentees. I teach them to always answer their phone professionally, have a good reliable vehicle, a good computer, have a great manner, be ethical and humble and always listen.
It takes a lot of my time initially to mentor. When the mentee gains confidence and competence, it relieves my workload because I can pass on work and share the load.
Q9. If there is one essential piece of advice you could pass on to less experienced marine surveyors, what would it be?
Be honest, be humble, act with integrity and don’t be influenced to change anything in your report. Write the facts down as you see them.
If you are known to be dishonest, or doctoring your assessments, it can be devastating to your reputation. Most of my work comes from clients and people in the industry that know I have integrity and my reports are true to what I see.
Q10. When the work is done for the day, how do you choose to relax and unwind?
Sailing, motorbiking, taking my wife out, spending time with friends and overseas travel.
Peter and his wife Jan with best friend George (a Greek maritime lawyer) on their charter boat in the Greek islands.
Q11. What was the last good book you read?
“Bad Monkey” by Carl Hiaasen.
Editor’s note - About the book: Former Miami cop Andrew Yancy investigates a suspicious death involving a frozen arm while dealing with eccentric characters, including a voodoo
witch and a troublesome monkey.)
Q12. I believe you split your time between Queensland and Corfu. For those who do not know this idyllic Greek island, what is it that you like so much about the area?
Our trips to Greece each year are a mix of holiday, plus a bit of work so it becomes a working holiday, meaning we can afford the trip and stay all summer, usually 3-4 months at a time. I do the occasional inspection for local Greek brokers and also some insurance claims work for insurers.
We also have a motorbike in Greece and undertake trips to Greek islands and neighbouring Italy.
Peter’s yacht charter crew every year, Corfu.
