Two iconic Flagship Cruises ferries gain national recognition San Diego’s oldest family-owned
and operated tour boat and ferry company, Flagship Cruises & Events, founded in 1915, is currently in the process of building two cutting- edge, all-electric, zero-emission ferries. But meantime two of its most cherished working vessels have earned national recognition.
The Silvergate (built in 1940) and the Cabrillo (built in 1960 have been officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This designation acknowledges the cultural, architectural, and maritime significance of the vessels, which are among San Diego’s last remaining historic ferries still on the water.
Both ferries have played an integral role in shaping the region’s identity—from serving local transportation needs to becoming beloved icons of the waterfront experience.
“These ferries are more than boats; they are living history,” said Brad Engel, president of Flagship Cruises & Events, “The Silvergate and Cabrillo have carried millions of passengers across San Diego Bay and have stood as constant witnesses to the city’s growth and transformation. We are honoured to see their legacies recognized at the national level.”
The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government’s official list of historic buildings, districts, objects, and sites deemed worthy of preservation. This designation supports continued preservation efforts and ensures these vessels remain active and accessible for future generations.
EBI adds new members and sets fresh strategy European Boating Industry (EBI) held its
general assembly during boot Düsseldorf in January 2026. During the meeting, EBI confirmed changes to its membership and presented a strategic framework to guide its activities through to 2028.
Hanse Yachts appoints CFO as CEO steps down
German sailing yacht and motorboat manufacturer Hanse Yachts AG has announced a management realignment, returning to a dual co-CEO leadership structure.
The company’s Supervisory Board has appointed Holger Passauer as chief financial officer, effective immediately. A new chief executive officer will be announced soon following the departure of former CEO Hanjo Runde.
Andreas Müller, CEO of S.D.L. Süddeutsche Leasing AG, said the company is “now on the right track.” The company also stated that investments in personnel expansion will be made in the near future.
EBI announced an expansion of its membership, bringing the organisation to 34 members across 24 European countries. British Marine was accepted as a new full member. In a statement, EBI says that this development reflects ongoing trade links and regulatory cooperation between the EU and the UK. The UK is the largest importer of recreational boats into the EU and the second-largest export destination for EU- built boats.
EBI also confirmed the membership of the Nordic Cluster, formalising cooperation between industry associations in the Nordic region. The cluster includes Danboat in Denmark, Sweboat in Sweden, Norboat in Norway, the Association of Estonian Marine Industries in Estonia and Finnboat in Finland. These organisations are now represented collectively within EBI.
