Next, I set the center of the copper strip against the pin and bent it around the pin. T en I used pliers to hold the copper strip onto the pin and a straight edge to bend the strip open to create a pocket in the middle. (Figure 4) T e combination of holding the strip in place with pliers and opening the strip with a straight edge ensures that there is a nice square bend around the pocket into which the pin needs to fi t. Repeat this process to make the matching strip because every set needs two of these components.

Now on to assembling the pintle. T ere are two options here, either solder the pin into the pocket in the strip or use quick setting epoxy. I decided against using solder because of the time it takes to raise the copper strip and the pin to a temperature that ensures a decent solder joint.

Aſt er mixing the epoxy, I fi lled the pocket with it and set the strip around the pin. I used aluminum foil below the joint to ensure that the epoxy did not attach to the wood below. (Figure 5) Aſt er the epoxy had set, it was easy to clean off any excess epoxy with a knife or fi le.

T e next step was to bend the components to fi t on the rudder and the sternpost. (Figure 6) I was lucky with my model in that the sternpost and the rudder had the same thickness. Forming the components must be done off the model to avoid damage, so use off cuts that are the same thickness as the rudder and
