Two images of composite masts are very useful. Figure 11 shows Glory of the Seas composite main mast with V-shaped chapeling and iron banding and Figure 12 is an actual lower composite mizzen mast from an unknown wrecked clipper ship. Note the chapeling beneath the banding. T is design is similar to composite masts on Glory of the Seas with the exception being a fl at valley fl oor instead of the deep V-cut visible in Glory’s main mast. Notice too, the number of iron bars utilized to strengthen this mast’s internal structure. Typically, built masts had hollow
centers and just atop the mast cap there was a vent cap to permit air fl ow within the mast, ostensibly to prevent dry rot.
Added backstays dramatically improve Glory of the Seas performance
