Both illustrations are drawn to identical scales. It is fascinating to see McKay’s design evolution, comparing the drawings to each other. Ultimately my goal is to fi nally accurately realize as many of Donald McKay’s spectacular clippers as possible, based entirely on historical resources and contemporary images.

Rob then built the three solid tops. All components were carefully replicated exactly as they appeared on the ship. Here again, we saw a detail that is usually too small: the lubber’s holes were much larger than we fi rst thought. (Figures 33 and 34) Figures 35 and 36 show two structural views of foremast solid tops faithfully replicating those on the Glory of the Seas.
