into the bottle. Once the model is in position, the masts are erected and fi xed in place.
Tools needed are a good set of tweezers, a few pliers and a carving knife.
7. Radio-controlled models
I decided to add radio control in this article because radio control is not only for boat models that come out of the box. (Figure 10) A modeler can build any model in any of the techniques, with the exception of the solid hull or bread-and-butter construction, and install a radio receiver into it. T ere is no reason why a model, either a kit or scratch-built, cannot have a radio control installed provided it has adequate displacement for the equipment and the builder can have fun at the pond.
3D-printing is more for the technological savvy modeler who is into computer technology and would like to combine that with model building. T ere are internet sites where you can download ship plans in the correct fi le format that most 3D printers can understand. On those sites one can also download detailed parts for ship models built in the traditional way. T e challenge is to design and print your own historically correct ship model.
8: 3D-printed models
I leſt the next three topics for last because they can be a bit controversial. T e purists will not see these models a part of ship or boat modeling hobby. I feel the opposite. Each type of model building has unique challenges. As with everything, technology moves on and so can our hobby expand with it.
