As a child, I would go to a barber shop with my dad nearly every Friday night where there was an encased model of a schooner. T e graceful lines of the hull and the intricate rigging captured my attention. In grade school, I assembled a plastic model of the British clipper, Cutty Sark; however, most of my model making at that time, and through high-school, focused on plastic model cars as well as balsa free- fl ight and u-control model airplanes.
T e idea of building wooden tall-ship models remained in my mind, but I did not see a kit until I was into my mid-forties. Soon thereaſt er, one was in my possession (HMS Beagle) and the trials and tribulations of building had begun. Since then, my interest in building and studying wooden model ships has continued to increase dramatically.

Professionally I have been a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for thirty- fi ve academic years. Being a teacher and scholar is mentally fulfi lling, but it does not have the hands-on allure of creating a physical work of art. Now moving into retirement, I expect to devote additional time to the hobby and aim to begin a transition into scratch building.
