10. Radio-controlled tugboat model.

T e main disadvantage of this technique is the initial capital outlay. A good 3D printer is expensive, and you need a decent computer with a computer-aided- drawing (CAD) soſt ware package that can be used to design for 3D printing drawings.

9: 3D puzzles

T ese puzzles are becoming more popular. For a modeler that would like to start but has time constraints, this is a good way to build a ship model. Foam models are light and the components can be bent in order to make a decent 3D model. (Figure 11)

T en there is the metal form of these puzzles. T ey are available in relatively small scales and can be purchased from various web sites as well as hobby shops. T ese models will last longer than their foam cousins.

Tool wise: you will need small long-nose, fl at-nose, and cutting pliers. Some of the components are small

and fragile. I suggest that if anyone wants to give this a go, get a good magnifying glass on a head band.

10: Other

With the research I did on this topic, I realized that basically anything can be used to build a model boat or ship. It is up to the modeler’s own imagination and creativity. A few that I found are models in LEGO, match sticks, bone, scrap metal, anything you can lay your hands on. To build your model, you can use materials and techniques out of the Egyptian pharaohs’ time or you can use the latest and greatest technology. It all depends on your imagination, interest, and on how deep your pockets are.

Conclusion During the compilation of

this article, I realised

that this hobby is accessible for everyone interested in model building whether it is just for building a beautiful model or if your interest is also in the historic background of the ship. It is accessible to all skill levels, and it accommodate every fi nancial
