ASSOCIATION INSIGHTS:
NEXT GENERATION IN TRUCKING ASSOCIATION
Promoting Careers in Trucking
O
ne of our goals at Next Generation in Trucking
Association is to make it as easy as possible to promote trucking careers to students. In 2022 we created a task force to create a “careers in trucking” presentation. The information gathered for this presentation was based on a focus group that was put on by the Nebraska Trucking Association, ATRI, and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Based on their findings, Next Gen Trucking’s task force created the Careers in Trucking Presentation, which was funded by generous donations.
The results of the focus group revealed what Gen Z found most appealing about the trucking industry and which advertisements resonated best with them.
Based on their findings, the presentation we created would then focus on 6 main topics, including the supply chain, transportation career pathways, trucking as an essential career, lifestyles of truckers, pay and benefits, and technology in trucking. Our hope is that you will take this presentation to your local school district to ensure trucking is represented in their career explorations classes. The presentation is meant to be easy to follow so that someone that does not know much about trucking could present it, or you could even consider presenting it to the class.
So what is the first step in utilizing this presentation? Connect with your local school! It might sound intimidating, but schools love to partner with local employers and help prepare their students for great careers. If you don’t know your local school, you can find them with a search here:
nces.ed.gov/ccd/schoolsearch/. Let them know that you would like to make sure trucking is represented at their school. Also, see if they have any opportunities to partner with them by being a part of their events or providing any materials. Oftentimes schools have career fairs, field trips, and other ways to get connected and it just takes a phone call!
NGT and state associations are doing their best to create opportunities for students to get exposure to trucking as a career. Several state associations, including Iowa and Idaho, have mobile driving simulators that they take around to schools in their state. Some students get their first experience of getting behind the wheel of a truck this way. Other states, including Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina, have partnered with Be Pro
Be Proud which promotes skilled trades (including trucking). They have a mobile trailer which gets taken to schools.
Schools and students are ripe and ready to learn about opportunities in the trucking industry. Last year college enrollment was the lowest it has been in 50 years. Young people are questioning the model of going to college and getting student loan debt just to sit behind a desk. NOW is the time to come together and promote the amazing careers we offer and get these students on the right track towards a career in trucking!
