As this is an open face operation the systemis usually operated in groundwith limited groundwater levels. Having opened the bore is to the correct dimensions the product pipe is then jacked into the bore expelling the auger and auger casing at the reception shaft at the far end of the drive. GuidedAuger Boremachines are currently capable of installations, dependent themanufacturer andmachine type, fromabout 100mm up to about 1,700mmo.d. Themachines are often operated fromwithin the start shaft although they can inmany cases be operated fromoutside of the shaft by remote control. Developments around the capabilities of guided augermachines have meant that to significant extent they have in themselves becomemore like the traditionalmicrotunnellingmachines in terms of diameter of installation capacity. Thesemachines nowoffer inmany cases the option to install pipelines using two-pass or possibly even single passmethodologies depending on the circumstances and this is at diameters that competewellwith themore traditionalmicrotunnellers. For example, there is nowthe option to use the guided auger rigs, many ofwhich providemuch higher jacking tonnage capacity than earlier rigs, to bore not only through clay conditions but also through harder formations and even solid rock.The systems are designed to use specialist cutting heads for thesemore arduous circumstances.
