• EPB Systems which can install pipelines up to over 1,000mat diameters from 350 to 4,000mmo.d. in soft ground conditions. The system is particularly useful in fine soils with lowwater permeability. Excavated soil gathers in the excavation chamber where spoil and the machine advance force builds the face support pressure. This pressure is maintained by removing some excavated soil transported by screw conveyor out of the excavation chamber onto extraction systems which take it to the launch shaft. Themts Hybrid systems can also be utilised in EPB mode.
• Hard Rock Systems which can install pipelines up to over 1,000 mat diameters from DN1200 to DN 4000 in fractured and unfractured rock ground conditions. The system uses a gripper station in stable ground conditions which grips against the tunnelwall to move forward. In fractured rock, unstable tunnel walls are supported by pipes or segments.

In terms of Guided Auger Boring systems, PERFORATOR GmbH, also part of the Schmidt-Kranz-Group of companies offers the Perforator range of equipment. Under the name of PBA machines, again available through T.A Drilling in the UK the guided auger systems comprise: • Sewer ConstructionMachines which are designed for installations from 121mmto 1,016mmdiameter and are generally utilised for house-hold service connections. Offering both steered and non-steered installations the machines can operate from small excavation pits aswell as in round pits/ shafts with a minimum diameter of 2 m. The machines can be supplemented with extension frames of different lengths to fit project specifics.
• Pipeline ConstructionMachines which are designed for installations from 324mmto 1,720mmdiameter offering a robust design, high jacking forces and torques up to 100,000 Nm. They may be utilised in both steered and non-steered installations and can install either lost or reusable steel protection tubes. specifics. Jacking pipe types that may be installed include reinforced concrete, fiberglass, Polycrete, etc.
Tracto-Technik –With systems in the UK available through Tracto- Technik UK, Tracto-Technik equipment is a highly-regarded German manufactured range of trenchless and HDD equipment with three full-service offices in the UK in Bedford, Cheadle and Kirkcaldy. The GRUNDOBORE range of guided augers consists of two models including the 200S and the 400S. The GRUNDOBORE 200S is claimed to be the most compact boring system available on the market and can be launched from a 1m manhole or exceptionally smallwork pit. The rig can even be disassembled into its single components for launch from a manhole with an opening of only 625 mm. A support launch frame kit is available in this instance. The small overall dimensions of the unit, at 970mm(length) x 567mm(width) x 625mm(height), are not compromised when it comes to productivity. The 200S‘compact miracle’as it is known has a maximum thrust force of 200 kN and pulling for of 250 kN for great performance in a tiny space. Navigational control is provided using a‘walk-over’guidance systems similar to that used with HDD installations or using a theodolite-based, optical system. The GRUNDOBORE 400S is a larger auger boring unit thatworks out of a pit and enables high positional accuracy for pipe lines. It is especially suitable for sewage connections up to 406mmdiameter. A useful feature is the extendable main frame which extends to 8.5 mto allowfor casing pipe strings in lengths up to 6 m. Overall dimensions of 2,100mmx 990mmx 1,200mmenable excellent performance characteristics of 400 kN thrust force and 315 kN of pulling power. The horizontal auger boring method is a highly reliable static process for installing domestic and commercial sewage connections aswell as product and steel protection pipes under streets and railways tracks. Installation with the GRUNDOBORE can be either steered or non-steered for the installation of drainage pipes, pressure pipes etc. using pipe types including concrete, clay and other materials. Installations can include sewer service connections, under- crossings of streets and railway tracks and longitudinal sewer installation. In terms of directional guidance, the pilot pipe steering head is controlled by an electro-optical video theodolite measuring system.
