THE MAGAZINE FOR THE DRAINAGE,WATER &WASTEWATER INDUSTRIES

MAIN FEATURE

be altered to suit the geology, or changes therein, utilising the company’s experienced engineers and tunnelling staff. Using the company’s equipment range it is possible to complete long- distance curved driveswith a typicalminimumradius of 250mor 1o joint rotation. Furthermore, smaller radii are possible using jack control systems.Depth is also not a limiting factor projects have been carried out on tunnels at depths exceeding 40m. The type of installations achieve using these systems include drainage, pressure pipes etc. and the pipe types installed can include concrete, clay, other jackingmaterials. So,whilst thewider industrymay not hear toomuch these days about the use ofmicrotunnelling or guided auger boring, this does not appear to be because of lack of utilisation. There are several companies offering equipment andmore that use this equipment on a regular basis, even though herewe have only looked at a sample of those in

the sector. The increasing awareness of the public of trenchless techniquesmay not be as strong as somemight like it to be, but that does notmean the industry should orwill revert tomore traditional techniques. The environmental, time and cost advantages of awell-planned correctly implemented and successfully executedmicrotunnel or guided auger bore still far outweigh the disruption and inconvenience caused by open cut options. All perhaps that could be said is that contractors and equipment suppliers should understand that the industry and those around it still like to hear of these successes evenwhen to those that carry themout they seemmundane and every-day operations. It is only by highlighting these run-of-the-mill operations that the‘specialist’title that still pervades some areas of the planning fraternitywill be lifted when it comes to the use of not onlymicrotunnelling and guided auger systems but alsomany other trenchless options.Only thenwill the industry, local authorities and the public at large really see the true benefits of trenchless techniques to their every-day lives.
