Help prevent a second wave: Update published to help organizations work safely and stop the spread of COVID-19

Version 2 of BSI’s SafeWorking Guidelines has published today, to help organizations protect people atwork fromthe ongoing coronavirus risks, mitigate outbreaks and build long-termresilience. The newly updated Guidelines include hundreds of contributions from experts across industry, academia, and governments globally, to consolidate practical guidance and experiences fromthe pandemic. In addition to safety planning and assessment of risks, it nowprovides advice onmanaging suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 in all workplaces, including at home and inmobile settings.

TheGuidelines include recommendations to: • Treat any personwho becomes unwell in theworkplace as potentially havingCOVID-19

• Ensure suitable PPE is provided for first aiders • Isolate the personwho is unwell and provide themwith a facemask • Require the affected person to go home (or to amedical facility) • Establish if an affectedworker has been in close contactwith other workers and support thoseworkers to self-isolate

• Ensure the areas the affected person has been in are either isolated or cleaned

• Provide clear guidance onwhen it is safe for aworkerwho has had COVID-19 to return towork.

The Guidelines state that reasonable adjustments should bemade to FOLLOW US

supportworkers returning towork after contracting COVID-19, taking into account their physical and psychological needs. One such example is allowing flexiblework hours and time off.

Scott Steedman,Director of Standards at BSI said,“Thisweek, asmany organizations reopen their doors to customers and staff,we are faced with the challenge of protecting the public by helping to prevent work-related outbreaks of the virus.Workingwith technical experts, BSI has set out clear and practical guidance for organizations tomitigate the risks ofCOVID-19,minimize transmission, andmanage suspected and confirmed cases”. TheGuidelines highlight the need tomake sure safetymeasures are inclusive and accessible to everyone, and to recognize the importance ofworkers’psychological health andwell-being. It also includes new guidance on: • Safe use of toilets • Working fromhome • Reporting to external parties. Workingwith anAdvisoryGroup*, BSIwill continue to revise the Guidelines, as often as necessary, to reflect the dynamic situation. Each revisionwill take into account public feedback, government guidance, the level of risk, and emerging knowledge. The thirdVersion of the guidelines is expected to publish inAugust.
