A stitch in time saves thousands

MammothMTS is the UK’smain HammerHead Trenchless dealership supplying impact hammers for installation, ramming and piling operations aswell as HammerHead pipeline replacement systems for pipe bursting. MammothMTS recently supplied a HammerHead 130mm diameter impact hammer (mole) toMark Taylor Groundworkwhichwas contracted to install some 300m of newpipework as part of a project for a company based in theMidlands, which supplies timber products to one of the UK’smajor DIY chains. The projectwas to replace part of an 800mlongwater ringmain thatwas exhibiting severe leakage to the tune of some 18m3 per daywhichwas costing the company around £880 per day. Investigations as to possible solutions for the ringmain installation showed that open cutworks for thewhole projectwould impact significantly on the daily operations of the client site, so an alternativewas sought. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)was investigated but estimates put the cost of theworks at around £46,000 to complete the 300mlong section. After enquirieswith MammothMTS, itwas believed the project could be completed for around £10,000 by using the impact hammer installation technique. Thismuch reduced cost not only covered the cost of themole and the crewbut also the ancillaries that are required to operate themole effectively and safely.
