Around 1996, “Mr. R”, along with Mom and Dad, started their BBQ tailgater, eventually growing to the point to a nearly 3-day event. His Mom and Dad would help with preparations until their passing in 2014.
His girlfriend, Kat, quickly
then and now certainly enjoy the friendships made over the years thanks to many great people in the hobby. “We put dollar values on insulators but friendships are priceless” says “Mr. R”.
As my collection was becoming an assemblage due to its size, once again, new CD’s were slow in coming. A third disappointment plateau was reached early in the new millennium when thought was given to seriously collecting porcelain. However, almost starting from scratch was an obstacle for me, that would place that interest, at least for the time being, on the back burner. Porcelain was still collected but not seriously and would be boxed up and stored.
In 1999, the
magazine that I had enjoyed for the past 30 years, Crown Jewels, was struggling printing for all collectors to enjoy. In February 2011 the magazine went full color
with him and hearing his large porcelain collecting stories was still not enough to make me go after the mud. I was certainly impressed by the photographs of his tailgaters keeping that collection in the back of my mind. Four years later in talking with “Mr. R” he made a comment that his collection might be for sale and could possibly be a great addition to my ElectroMechanical museum for the upcoming 2014 National Show here in Farmington.
Still not convinced but
seriously thinking about going for it could be a possibility, however the suggested price was not acceptable. As a detective would say, the “case would go cold” for the next 5 years.
During subsequent conversations I could begin to sense that his passion for the collection was strong and with family memories involved, breaking up the museum I began to feel that I needed to prepare for a possible mudslide with serious negotiations beginning in mid 2018. A deal was soon struck for the entire inside and outside collection including the massive amount of junk to add to the newly forming “mud mound” located near aqua and clear mounds.
“temple of mud” has begun its mudslide thing I noticed, is that Bill was experiencing periods of separation anxiety as he would hold almost every piece and say goodbye.
