CHAPTER 1 PAGE 8
Preparing Yourself for Sailing
Sailors like to apply the Scouts’ motto,
“Be prepared,” when they sail, and it certainly applies to clothing because the weather and sailing conditions can change quickly.
Sailing can give you a wonderful sense of freedom out on the water in the bright sun and cooling breeze. But, even if you are new to sailing, you should recognize that overexposure— like sunburn and getting cold or wet—can reduce the fun and safety of sailing.
You may be away from land for hours at a time, so you need to dress for the weather and bring only what you need. Te air temperature on the water may be significantly different than on shore. Dress in comfortable clothes that allow you to move easily, wear shoes with nonskid soles, and bring a jacket or raingear that is water and wind resistant. Layering clothing helps you adjust to changes in temperature and wind conditions. Use a waterproof bag for your gear.
