Tacking

Aſter learning to steer and trim the sails on a reach, the time will come to turn around and sail back to where you started. To turn around you will tack.

When tacking, the bow heads up and coasts through the entire 90° No-Go Zone.

In order to tack, the skipper prepares the crew, then pushes the tiller to leeward so the bow turns through the wind. Center the tiller as soon as the mainsail has filled with wind. Te boat will start to sail in the new direction.

Te crew follows the skipper’s directions to tack, trimming the active sheet on the leeward side as the boat heads into the wind. Once the jib luffs in the middle of the boat, the crew releases the old sheet and trims the new one to the appropriate point of sail.

Alternative Terms: Tacking is also referred to as “coming about”.
