CHAPTER 13 PAGE 45.

The Skipper Duties: Think it through before you start. First, sail onto a deep broad reach or near run by slowly pulling the tiller away from the mainsail to turn downwind. Continue to watch for obstructions. Trim the mainsheet as you continue turning the boat to a run. As the boom crosses the centerline, immediately center the tiller, duck under the boom and cross the cockpit. You will learn to change hands for the sheet and tiller behind your back without looking down.

The Crew Duties: Tend the jib and shift weight to flatten heeling.

Communication: Traditionally, sailors say “Ready to jibe?” and then

“Jibe-ho”–meaning “jibing”–as they turn the boat. Whichever term you choose, make sure your crew hears it in time to prepare and safely duck under the boom through the maneuver.

Step 3: Boom Swings Across Skipper

• Stay low for better balance and to avoid the boom. • Change sides leading with aft foot. • Center the tiller as boom crosses the centerline. • Ease mainsail quickly.

Crew • Duck under the boom. • Balance the boat through the jibe.

Steer New Course Skipper

• Check the wind direction for proper sail trim.

Crew
