Accidental Jibe If you accidentally sail past 180° or let the stern turn so the wind is on the same side of the boat as the boom, the boom could accidentally swing across the boat uncontrolled – very fast and hard. Te boat can roll wildly. Someone might get hurt or some part of the rigging might be damaged. A capsize is possible. All are good reasons to avoid an accidental jibe.
If you do jibe accidentally, steer straight on a broad reach to regain control and settle the boat down. You can then plan a controlled jibe to get back on course.
Tiller Control
Jibing needs much less tiller movement than tacking–only a few de- grees rather than push- ing the tiller all the way to one side.
To control the jibe, trim in the mainsail before you jibe, but quickly re- lease the sheet aſter the jibe is complete.
