Once under sail, the helmsman can practice steering. At first, try to sail on a beam reach. Steer as straight as possible. Ten try turning up to a close reach, back to a beam reach, and down a little bit onto a broad reach. Adjust the sails as you change course. Only small tiller adjustments (a few inches either way) are needed to make these changes in point of sail. Large movements of the tiller are needed when changing direction to tack or to avoid a collision.
Notice:
• How much movement of the tiller it takes to make the bow turn fast or slow.
• How much time elapses from the moment you turn the tiller until the bow starts to turn.
• How the boat continues to turn a little more aſter you center the tiller.
