CHAPTER 9 PAGE 30
Getting Underway
Before getting underway, your boat may be in any number of places: at a dock, on the beach, on a trailer or on a mooring. You may have to launch the boat via a ramp or crane, or take a tender to get to it.
No matter how your boat is stored or launched, you can apply what you have learned to get underway.
Be prepared for sun, cold, wet and thirst (see chapter 1).
Be familiar with the boat and the equipment (see chapter 2).
Be aware of the area where you are sailing (see chapter 3). Know the wind direction, tide, current and weather (see chapter 4).
Remember the points of sail and No-Go zone (see chapter 5). Rig the boat thoroughly (see chapter 8).
Make sure the skipper and crew know their jobs for steering, sail trim, looking out and communicating (see chapters 6 and 7).
Remember to:
•Make sure you are wearing your life jacket.
• Step into the middle of the boat to keep your balance. Hold on to the deck or mast for support.
• Check that the “board” is down and the rudder and tiller are in place ready to use.
• Stow your personal gear –usually to- ward the bow.
• Raise the sails, if you haven’t already. • Coil (see page 51) the halyards. • Check that everyone is ready. • Untie the boat and push off.
