Sailors can be wonderful people. Their love of the sport and their willingness to contribute time and effort for the good of fellow sailors is remarkable. That commitment and dedication to purpose has been present in every phase of the creation of Learn Sailing Right! Beginning Sailing.

Many people have been involved in the development of Learn Sailing Right! Beginning Sailing, the first book in the Learn Sailing Right! series. But, we must recognize those that created the foundation on which Learn Sailing Right! Beginning Sailing is built, the progenitors of Start Sailing Right! The family of US SAILING Small Boat Sailing instructional materials owes a life-long debt to Timmy Larr, Derrick Fries, Susie Trotman, Mark Smith, Jim Muldoon, and the National Faculty members of years past. Due to the efforts of these individuals, we continue to create the premier educational materials in sailing today.

Rich Jepsen, Training Division Chairman, is owed a debt of gratitude for sharing in the vision of this series and providing the leadership to create the best training materials available. Special appreciation is given to Janine Connelly, US SAILING’s Training Director, and her staff for keeping this project on track and making the unwieldy manageable.

Project management Sheila McCurdy, US SAILING’s National Faculty chair, vice commodore of the Cruising Club of America and U.S. Naval Academy Fales Committee member, supervised this project from the start. From drafting a business plan and coordinating initial efforts with illustration and design, to directing teams of volunteers, she guided Learn Sailing Right from the concept stage.

Hart Kelley, Head Sail Trainer at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, National Faculty member and Small Boat Master Instructor Trainer, and Kim Hapgood, Program Director of Sail Newport and National Faculty member and Small Boat Master Instructor Trainer, took us from fifty-percent to publication. Final editing, illustration changes and design coordination were all due to their diligence and tenacity.

Writing The initial concept of Learn Sailing Right! was drafted by John Kantor, founder and Director of Longshore Sailing School. Sheila McCurdy, working with US SAILING’s National Faculty, turned that early vision into the book we have today.

Editing Andy German, publications department editor at Mystic Seaport, brought a keen eye and efficacious contributions to Learn Sailing Right!

Illustration Our many thanks to illustrator, surfer, and sailor Michael Boardman for turning difficult concepts into facile visuals.

Design Our thanks to graphic designer Darcy Magratten, whose talents assembled our work into greater coherence.

Content consulting To our field of experts, the National Faculty members Kim Hapgood, Hart Kelley, Morgan Collins, Derrick Fries, Rachel Miller, Peter Durant, Betsy Alison, John Kantor, Jo Mogle, Rich Brew, Guy Fleming, Alex Howland, and Sarah Kent we express our appreciation for their insights, contributions, edits, dedication and volunteerism.
