Putting It All Together
Pay attention to the basics: • Look where you are going.
•Watch for other boats to prevent collision.
• Know the wind direction.
•Move your weight to control the heel of the boat.
•Match your sail trim to your point of sail.
• Try not to oversteer or make sudden movements with the tiller.
Sailing skills can be learned one at a time, but the time comes when they must be used in combination. Like any new physical or mental activity, the first time you try to put it all together can feel awkward or challenging. Don’t worry, you have the ability to control the boat and the sails. You can always use the safety position, or stop and start as you wish. You can steer and trim sails. On your first sail, practice what you have learned so far.
