CHAPTER 15 PAGE 52

Courtesy and Navigation

Courtesy on the water makes sailing more fun for everyone. Treat others as you would like to be treated. Beyond courtesy, there are the Navigation Rules – like traffic laws – that can be enforced by authorities.

Te Navigation Rules help prevent accidents. Te rules apply to the smallest rowboat and the largest tanker. In general, the Navigation Rules:

• Specify which of two vessels on a collision course should “give way” to the other.

• Require every vessel to avoid collision even if they have the rights of the “stand-on” vessel. Less experienced sailors should stay clear of boating traffic. Sail defensively.

Tiller Toward Trouble – Tree Ts Situations 1

If you get too close to a hazard or boat, remember the “Tree Ts.” Point the tiller at the boat or object you need to avoid. Your boat will turn away from the potential problem, unless the trou- ble is ahead of you.
