CHAPTER 8 PAGE 27.
Rigging the Mainsail Te mainsail may be folded like an accordion or rolled like a tube. Begin by attaching the foot. Te foot should be on the outside of the roll or the long side of the accordion fold.
Te foot may or may not be attached to the boom depending on the sail type. If the foot of the sail is designed to attach to the boom, slide the sail on. Start by attaching the clew to the aſt end of the boom. Once the foot has been rigged, attach the tack.
Five Rigging Steps for the Mainsail
Te tack–usually where the sailmaker’s logo is–attaches to the forward end of the boom. Next, attach the outhaul to the clew before securing it to the sail. With the sail partially rigged, check to make sure the battens are in place along the leech. Make sure the sail stays untwisted by running your hands along the sides of the leech or the luff as you prepare to raise the sail up the mast. Te main halyard will attach to the head. Look up the mast to be sure the halyard is not wrapped around anything before securing it to the sail. Keep some tension on the main halyard while you start hoisting the sail several inches up the mast. Secure the end of the halyard to a cleat to keep the luff from falling out of the mast groove.
