CHAPTER 16 PAGE 58
Seamanship and Safety
Person in the Water (PIW) Someone may fall into the water while the boat is sailing. Sometimes they can swim back to the boat. If not, it is important to know how to retrieve them.
Figure 8 Rescue Step 1: Keep visual contact. If available, throw an extra life jacket to the person in the water.
Step 2: Sail approximately 4-6 boat lengths on a beam reach. Step 3: Tack and bear off to a broad reach. Step 4: Cross over your wake, then head up to a close reach to return to person in the water. Step 5: Control your speed such that the boat stops in safety position to leeward of the person in the water.
Step 6: Bring the person back aboard over the stern using an underarm grab.
Te goal of any PIW rescue is to get that person back on board as quickly as possible.
WIND TACK
If the PIW experiences an injury, excercise due care prior to hauling them onboard.
