hotel reviews THE ATHENAEUM HOTEL & RESIDENCES, LONDON

Refurbished in July 2016, the Athenaeum hasn’t lost any of its elegance. My Park Suite on the sixth floor is bright, fresh and inviting. The spacious bed is especially comfortable and makes for a solid night’s sleep, helped by the effectively soundproofed windows which completely shut out the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly below. The beautiful bathroom gleams with white marble and there’s a power shower and large bath. Downstairs, at Galvin at The Athenaeum, I’m guided through the stylish restaurant to a cosy leather booth. Food is delicious and despite the luxurious feel to the evening, Galvin is surprisingly laid-back.The breakfast is perhaps the best I’ve ever had. The continental buffet vies for attention against a perfectly cooked full English. I leave feeling rested, relaxed and well-fed. Connor McGovern

KAMEHA GRAND, ZURICH

Hotels like the Kameha Grand — a member of the Autograph Collection — are really helping to inject a bit of wow factor into Zurich. Interiors by Marcel Wanders are brash, bold and unforgettable. My sizeable room couldn’t be better — the Ghostwriter Suite is perfect for real and aspiring writers. There’s a typewriter, book-themed furniture and rugs, as well as a library of books to keep you entertained. Dining options are varied, which is useful as the hotel is in an area under development a little way from the city centre, though there’s a tram stop right outside so getting around isn’t a problem. Service is crisp and friendly and there’s also a spa. A staff member can even drive you to the airport in the hotel’s own Maserati. It’s not just one of the top boutique hotels in Zurich, it’s one of the best hotels in the city full stop. Christopher Beanland

HOTEL KONG ARTHUR, COPENHAGEN

If you want a hotel to help launch you into the local lifestyle, the Kong Arthur in Copenhagen does that rather deſtly. The hotel hires out bikes, introduces you to the New Nordic breakfast concept (rye bread, boiled eggs, cured fish and organic cheese… lots of cheese) and offers a dose of hygge with its ‘cosy hour’ each evening at 5pm, when all guests are invited to the bar for a complimentary glass of wine or beer. Upstairs, my twin room is an L-shaped respite from the bitter Danish winter. Though the bathroom could do with a refurb, it’s comfortable and decked out in neutral tones. There’s a spa and several restaurants on site, but as it’s located near the Torvehallerne food market, the sprawling botanical gardens and the city’s serene lakes, there’s plenty to lure you into exploring too.
