| Indian Ocean | Ocean of opportunity

Few destinations are as evocative as the Indian Ocean. There’s so much more to the region than sumptuous resorts, finds Karl Cushing

T

he Indian Ocean has long been a hotspot for honeymooners, luxury-seekers and Hollywood elites — but there’s more to its islands than

splendid beaches. Perched between Africa, Asia and Australasia, it’s the world’s warmest and third largest ocean. The vast area offers a wealth of adventure for every type of holidaymaker, whether it’s the paradise

landscape of the Seychelles, family-friendly adventures in the Maldives or chameleon spotting in Madagascar. Sri Lanka’s proximity to the equator means constant balmy temperatures year-round, whilst Mauritius is the ideal spot for active travellers, with sports from sea-kayaking to biking on offer. With plenty of variety and numerous hotel openings, one island doesn’t have to fit all.
