DESTINATION NEWS Tourism gains for Jordan

Jordan’s popularity with British holidaymakers is on the rise, despite continuing turbulence in the Middle East. In the first quarter of 2017, visitor numbers

rose by 15.18% from 12,751 to 14,760 compared to the same period in 2016, with the UK remaining the largest European source market for the Hashemite Kingdom. A wealth of new openings in 2017, including hotels and atractions such as the Jordan Trail, a continuous hiking trail crossing the entire country, has boosted visitor numbers. Mahmoud Freihat, marketing executive

at Jordan Tourism Board, emphasised the importance for the wider Jordanian economy: “The growth in UK numbers is very important as it strengthens the country’s tourism sector

and all those businesses that support and service it. Many tourists come to see the famous sites from Petra to the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum, but the launches of the Jordan Trail and Aqaba’s first golf course in March 2017 have helped broaden the country’s appeal with sport and adventure holidaymakers.” In March, Royal Jordanian Airlines launched a

new connecting flight from London Heathrow to Aqaba, which runs on Saturdays from 31 March to 30 June and from 15 September to 31 December. The Hilton Dead Sea Resort and Spa also opened in March this year, closely followed by W Amman Hotel in June. In October, Ayla Golf Club, the country’s first, is set to host the seventh MENA Golf Tour. visitjordan.com
