SHANGRI-LA HOTEL QARYAT AL BERI

Abu Dhabi

LOCATION: Set on the outskirts of the city and on the mainland, the Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri enjoys a stunning view of the beautiful Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The rear of the property also overlooks Khor Al Maqta, a waterway that separates the

mainland from Abu Dhabi city. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: It’s hard not to be impressed the moment you set foot in the expansive lobby area. The decor draws on Arabic design and culture – it all feels extremely grand, but somehow also retains a homely vibe. This is due to the emirati hospitality, which sees guests welcomed by smiling staff serving Arabic

coffee and dates all day. A GOOD BASE FOR: Abu Dhabi sightseeing. The hotel may not be in the heart of the city, but being away from the hustle and bustle means it’s perfectly located for those who want a slice of the action before returning to its comfortable and calm surroundings. Despite being popular with business travellers, the hotel is well set up for families and couples. The hotel adjoins a souk (not owned by Shangri-La) which is primarily used by

locals but also has lots of touristy shops. THE FACTS: The hotel has 213 rooms and suites and six four-bedroom villas with private pools. Each room – ranging from the lead-in deluxe level to speciality and presidential suites – has a balcony with stunning views across the city. The culinary offering is impressive with five restaurants ranging from tapas and French to Chinese and Vietnamese. The Sofra Bld buffet offers one of the most expansive breakfasts I’ve ever seen

4

– there’s enough food on offer to feed the five thousand. In Chang Palace (the Chinese venue) you can choose between a dim sum small dish menu or dine à la carte. Whichever your client chooses, be sure they ask to see the kung fu tea master in action. Yes, that is his actual job title, and it’s justified because the ‘master’ not only has to learn the nuances of tea but also undergo up to nine months of

intensive kung fu training! WOW: There wasn’t just one wow, there were several! Service is always outstanding at Shangri-La Hotels, and

this property was no different. The staff were wonderfully attentive without being intrusive. Another big wow was the spa facilities, so huge that they are in a separate building. And the walk is pretty impressive too, with the two buildings linked by a canal that resembles the waterways in The Venetian in Las Vegas; there are even traditional wooden abra boats connecting the two.
