SPA GODDESS

SPA GODDESS

Thank you to Algarve Tourism Bureau for transfers. visitalgarve.pt

In 2015 Aspire launched a competition in partnership with Wellbeing Escapes to find eight agents who wanted to embrace wellness. We sent them in pairs to four different places, so they could experience wellbeing for themselves.

The last two agents went to Vilalara Thalassa Resort in Portugal, a destination that is pushing its wellness and spa focus. Jacquie Cole of Bakewell Travel and Jackie Frith of Travel-PA share their thoughts before, during and after the trip.

JACQUIE COLE, BAKEWELL TRAVEL

BEFORE: I’m expecting a huge spa with a wide variety of treatments, including a medical aspect. From the website, the setting looks stunning

and the resort overlooks the sea. I’m concerned that it’s quite remote because clients often want to venture out. On a personal level, I’m looking forward to finding out how unhealthy my lifestyle is; I try to keep healthy, but I’m keen to discover what improvements I can make. I’m slightly nervous about the liquid diet. The wellbeing market is one of the fastest-growing. I don’t know if I’d spend this kind of money on a short break, but I’m definitely interested to see what you get for your money.

DURING: This is certainly a high-end product, but it’s not expensive for what it is. I knew there was a medical side to it, but I had no idea how intensive it was. The Thalasso centre is out of this world, with a

huge range of treatments. The staff are professional and the analyses very detailed. My favourite treatment was the lymphatic drainage – it was the most relaxing. Surprisingly, despite the liquid diet, I haven’t felt that hungry. This is because the soups we have for lunch are so nutritious. The setting is great because there’s no temptation on your doorstep – nearby villages are easy to get to, but you feel remote at the same time. The whole resort is gorgeous and lovely to walk around, and it would be quite peaceful if you didn’t go during half-term.

AFTER: For me, the metaphysical session was the biggest eye-opener – it gave me a body age of 40 and I’m 55! The health assessments were more in-depth than I thought they would be. I also enjoyed the session with the nutritionist. While I’ve always been a healthy eater, she gave me tips and I’ve already implemented some of them. I also discovered I need more magnesium and I’ve bought some supplements.
