NCL promises a Leonardo ship for Southampton

Norwegian Cruise Line has rebutted claims it has reduced UK trade activity as it revealed plans to base one of its upcoming Leonardo-class of ships in Southampton.


Frank Del Rio, chief executive of


Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), said: “Southampton is the port for northern Europe. We do seasonal departures from Southampton, but it is not enough. “We will put our Leonardo-class


in Southampton.” Speaking at a round-table event


in London, Del Rio and other NCLH executives said comments made by Royal Caribbean International’s UK managing director, Ben Bouldin, that NCL had “stepped back” its trade activity were “offensive”. Harry Sommer, NCL’s executive


vice-president for international business development, said: “It is simply not true. We have 200 people in our Southampton office. The notion that we are not attached to this market – I actually find that offensive.” NCL president and chief


executive Andy Stuart said the line does “everything” for the UK trade. NCL’s Leonardo-class ships – the


first of which is due in 2022 – will be about 50% larger than the line’s Jewel-class ships. Del Rio said: “We have dozens of underserved markets because we do not have enough vessels, hence why we ordered six Leonardo-class [ships]. As each Leonardo-class ship launches, we will be able to move our Jewel-class to one of


those markets.We will then bring one of the Leonardo ships into those mature markets that has footing and growth. “I see Southampton continuing


to develop as a major cruise hub and the UK market to develop overall, so that it would warrant a vessel of that size.” He would not be drawn on


which year a Leonardo-class ship would be deployed to Southampton.

5 Contempt verdict for ‘sick’ family

A family of fraudsters who made claims for fake holiday sickness have been convicted of contempt of court.


Michael Jameson, 43, Claire


Weir, 35, Jane Weir, 38, and Janet Weir, 63, of Liverpool made fraudulent sickness claims against Jet2holidays, seeking more than £45,000 in compensation and costs. They are the first claimants that Jet2holidays has proven


to be in contempt of court, a criminal charge that requires a greater burden of proof than ‘fundamental dishonesty’, which other claimants have been found guilty of. The family was busted


when Jet2holidays unearthed social media posts at the time they alleged they were suffering from diarrhoea, stomach pain and cramps. Their posts included comments such as ‘Loved every minute’, ‘Wish I was there now Mum’, ‘Best holiday ever’

and ‘Lovely hotel, food’. Records at the all-inclusive Aqua Magic Rock Gardens in Benidorm showed the family had drunk lager, vodka and gin at the time they claimed to have been ill during


their stay in July 2015. The fraudsters were given suspended prison sentences of three months, fined £750 each and ordered to pay Jet2holidays’ costs. Justice Choudhury, sitting at Liverpool High Court, said the


evidence was “little short of overwhelming” and reiterated that holiday sickness fraud was “not victimless as some might think”. Horwich Farrelly, which


defended Jet2holidays in this case, has fought nearly 3,000 others in two years. Fraud partner David Scott said “many share the same evidence that we saw in this case”. He added: “They will now pay the price for this stupidity.” Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2holidays, said: “We have warned that making false claims could lead to serious consequences.”
