Experience Shenzhen
Around two hours from Guangzhou, in southeast China, Shenzhen is a bustling metropolis of the arts, entertainment and business. Situated on the Pearl River Delta, Shenzhen was named China’s first Special Economic Zone, which brought a wave of foreign investment and extraordinary growth. The city is now a hub of innovation and is the home of seven Fortune 500 companies. But scratch the surface of this global business city and you’ll find some of the finest architecture, delicious Cantonese cuisine and a range of distinctive neighbourhoods waiting to be explored. Shenzhen is also situated close to other cities on the
Pearl River Delta, and with excellent transport links in the air, on land and at sea, it’s the ideal base for those wanting to see more of the region.
Shenzhen has been named a Creative City of Design by Unesco – a title it gained 10 years ago. Head to the northeast of the city to appreciate just how vast its art scene really is with a visit to some of the many galleries and a look at the magnificent oil paintings in Dafen. For shopping, visit COCO Park in the city’s Futian
district. Spanning five floors and home to five cinema theatres, the complex also has a huge variety of restaurants and bars on offer, popular among tourists and locals. Formed of a number of theme parks, each with its
own character, Overseas Chinese Town is a must-see for visitors wanting to fill their days with sights and attractions. Window of the World, for example, displays more than 100 smaller reconstructions of some of the most famous tourist attractions in the world, including the Eiffel Tower and the Pyramids of Giza. Meanwhile, the China Folk Culture Village portrays daily village life in different settlements across the country. A newer development, OCT Harbour, is also situated
nearby. Home to a number of attractions, including a manmade lake and a shopping mall, the district is the ideal place for a late afternoon stroll before deciding which of the many restaurants you’ll get to experience for dinner. Despite being a bustling city, Shenzhen is not short
of greenery. One of the city’s top parks is the Mangrove Nature Reserve – a 360-plus-hectare space, which is home to nearly 200 species of birds. Its location on the banks of Shenzhen Bay makes it a great spot for cycling or strolling alongside the water. While the city is a modern hub of innovation, visitors don’t have to travel far to experience the rich history of the region. Less than 40 miles from the city centre lies the Shenzhen Dapeng Fortress. A historical settlement located inside city walls, the fortress area has a history dating back around 600 years. The town is home to a number of authentic family-run Cantonese restaurants with plenty to explore down the side streets.
