The office of the future will be unrecognisable, judging by the level of innovation on everything from the spaces they inhabit to the way they work

ffice spaces are getting even smarter, thanks to the sort of wireless technology that allows hot desks to be truly hot and banishes all unsightly cables to the past. Whether snaking under the floor to data points or training along the top of them taped to the carpet, they are often seen as necessary but outdated in the modern world. For one thing, they get in the way of the flexibility that smartphones, laptops and tablets are designed to provide. Bachmann of Stuttgart presented solutions in the form of batteries integrated into desks able to keep equipment charged all day and getting re-charged overnight. The company pointed out as pat of their next generation office concept that the world of work is changing and that trends such as desk sharing and “clean desks” are leading the way into a future in which working life is characterised by modern forms of co-operation. As a result, it says, “infrastructure needs to keep up with this, particularly power and data supply in buildings, offices and conference spaces”. Long-time exhibitors Veyhl were also back with innovations in ergonomics and acoustics in the familiar surroundings of
their booth resonating with cozy Black Forest ambience, showing the many options in their Agile range which support the trend of flexible and mobile office use. Kesseböhmer’s Smart Office solution - motto: an app for everything – included a sit-or-stand-table whose height can be adjusted by smartphone. The Yoyo app can also set the chair to the ergonomically correct height through a sensor mounted under the seat. The same app can also be used to book a workstation and control lighting. The company points out that one in three people suffer from back pain at some point in their working lives. In Germany alone, the resulting economic damage totals 49 billion euros every year, according to government figures.
And it poses the question: “To keep
employees healthy, it’s not enough to simply invest in office chairs with ergonomics stickers. Although good chairs are undoubtedly better than bad ones, what good is a great chair that is incorrectly adjusted in relation to the desk?” The actuator suppliers Linak also point out that workplace ergonomics is becoming increasingly the focus of attention worldwide, especially in jobs where employees need to sit or stand still most of the day, highlighting the benefits
