Technical and smart developments have taken the textiles sector to a whole new level, and if recent expert predictions are correct, it’s only just the beginning

he market in Technical Textiles has been identifi ed as one of the most segmented and developing in the world, according to a study by analysts at
futuremarkeresearch.com. It is one, the authors say, has been growing at
considerable speed thanks to “an increasing consumer preference and the development of new methods”. It names what it describes as “a
broad fi eld for competitors” in the so-called Sunshine
the likes of DuPont, Asahi Kasei Corporation, Kimberly-Clark, Mitsui Chemicals, Freudenberg, Ahlstrom, Honeywell
and Johns Manville
among the key players. Further afi eld, Ukraine is looking forward to US investment of $300 million to help develop their technical textiles and nonwovens industry, something seen as a response to the Russian government’s recent announcement of heavy investments in the sector, primarily targeted at the defence industry. Most textile companies in Germany are increasingly concentrating on technical textiles, although there has been a shift of late to the development of smart solutions such as electrically conductive, luminous, sensory or heating ones.

While research has been ongoing for more than 15 years, the numbers of products are available commercially are limited.
