“Today, innovation requires co-operation between different disciplines, by which I mean a dialogue between development and
application, between the
established companies and start-ups, between young and old. Therefore, interzum not only offers a worldwide unique platform for product innovations, but also an international industry forum. We provide a forum in which a highly diverse range of people can meet on an equal footing, even including industry representatives and the young talent who may go on to revolutionise the products of tomorrow.” The entries which did the most to impress all judges included CAPTin_Kiel - which stands for Clean Autonomous Public Transport - and was devised by Masters students at Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel. It combines a bus and ferry transport between the western and eastern shores of the Kiel Fjord. The jury praised the “combination of mobility concept, technology and the effortlessness of the aesthetics”.
Another was Pure, a mobile dialysis machine from Anna-
Lena Golz of HfG University of Design, at Schwäbisch Gmünd, who recognised that around 80,000 people in Germany suffer from severely restricted kidney function. Most are treated using a process called haemodialysis which is static. She sought a way of making the process “more flexible and mobile so that it can be incorporated into the patient’s life on a custom basis”.

The jury felt the design made “a considerable contribution increasing
quality of life” by saving patients from
attending hospital three times a week for five hours at a time. Another winner, Moor work, took the cultural context and environmentally-friendly use of a local natural product as its foundation in developing a brand whose products would be created in collaboration with regional workshops and publicly funded social welfare organisations in Lower Saxony and would promote the preservation of cultural diversity. The method, developed by Jan Christian Schulz at Hanover University of Applied Sciences, draws on the natural process by which bog oak is created, transferring it to oak timber that is ready to be worked, and permeating this with the striking deep black typical of the peat bog. The new riot police helmet conceived by a trio from the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, was designed to make practical use of augmented reality. Its three-layer construction is able to absorb impact, thanks to the new shock- absorbing properties behind the molecular structure of the special D3O foam from which the internal structure is made. The interface is projected on
to the inside of the visor and operated via a control unit on the forearm. The jury was impressed that an existing product had been reinterpreted using new technology. Honourable mentions were given to Paulina Grebenstein for her urban: eden rainwater management system, Johanna Gieseler for her Yeppa project which addresses the debate over bioethics in epigenetic optimisation, Pauline Alt for her Wavelet swimming aid, and Michael Beha for his Kuoda sensory gaming device.
