VDID AWARDS | INTERZUM 2019

INTERZUM 2019 AWARDS VDID

The results of the VDID Newcomers' Awards were announced on the final day, with four winners named and many more commended

T

he future of industrial design is in good hands, judging by the quality of the up-and- coming talent presenting their work at the VDID Newcomers’ Award. The presentation took place on May 24, the last day of the fair

and honoured what the jury saw as being worthy of a platform and support for a successful start to their careers. They were looking for the best student projects and fi nal

degree assignments completed at German universities between 2017 and 2019. The entrants were free to choose their own themes, knowing that work from all areas of product and industrial design would be accepted. In the end, there were 198 submissions from 30 universities. The jury selected four equally ranked recipients of the main prize and gave an honourable mention to four others. The award ceremony coincided with VDID Industrial Design Day where experts discussed the current driving factors in industrial design. The spectrum of expert contributions ranged from the modern handicraft factory with it's innovative product ideas for traditional materials, new design interpretations for market and brand strategies, to digitalisation in the name of utility. Drücker, Managing Director of Caussa UG, and the Indeed Innovation Business Strategist Tanja Kruse Brandao dealt with the interdisciplinary linking of innovative forces in industry, design and marketing. After the awards ceremony, there were presentations from Mathias Schwartz-Claus, Director, Domaine de Boisbuchet, Dr. Gerhard Dust and Andreas Kunsmann of PolyCare Research Technology before representatives of the VDIDlab posed questions on the theme of food in context, beginning by asking: What does a kitchen look like on Mars? The awards recognise industrial design not only as a driving force for the industry but something that mirrors technological, economic and socio-cultural trends. In the 60 years since VDID began, the designers’ job profi le has changed signifi cantly. These days, with increasingly digital surfaces and process management determine the work of industrial design and the transformation of the profession has been evident in award submissions. Purely digital solutions and conceptual competition entries increasingly refer to the skills

of the aspiring industrial

designers in the areas of user experiences and strategy development. For Maik Fischer, Director of interzum, this way of

fostering the next generation is hugely important:
