Discuss the cover page. Questions to promote discussion: • Who is in the picture? • What is happening? • Predict what will happen in the story.

Pair chat
In pairs, the children brainstorm together to come up with a list of things that Ella might do on her first day at school. Model first by saying, ‘I think Ella will play with toys’, ‘I think Ella will make new friends’.
Modified Activity (for less able pupils) Provide less able pupils with sentence starters.
Extension Activity (for more able pupils)
Encourage more able pupils to add more detail and use more complex sentences, e.g. ‘I think Ella will play with toys, perhaps she will play with the Lego and then the puzzles’.
