The children are now introduced to formal reading using both fiction and non-fiction texts. Each reader contains a series of short sentences that contain a mix of decodable CVC words, sight words and vocabulary words. The sight words have been taught a month in advance using the skills book and suggested activities. Each reader contains two vocabulary words. These are topic-specific words that should be taught in conjunction with the reader using a similar approach to the ‘Ten-Step Approach to the Teaching of Sight Words’ (see Sight Words section).
