Phonics: Real and Nonsense Words (Skills Book p. 114)
Reading: Understanding: LO 5 (phonics, word recognition and word study).
Write a nonsense word on the board, for example: tig. Ask for a volunteer to read the word.
Ask, ‘Does that sound right? Is “tig” a real word?’
Introduce the term ‘nonsense’. Explain that nonsense words are silly, make-believe words. Write some more words on the board and ask the children to read them and decide if they are real or nonsense. Use the digital activity to further develop the concept of real and nonsense words.
Using the skills book, encourage the children to:
A Draw an X on the nonsense words. Go Fish Real or Nonsense game
The children play Go Fish with real and nonsense words (see literacy station downloadable materials for Unit 8). How to play: • Pick a fish. • Turn it over and read it. • If it is a real word you keep it. • If it is a nonsense word you ‘bin it’. • The winner is the person who catches the most real words.
