The children write a report independently by drawing and labelling, sharing information about an animal of their choice (see downloadable materials for Unit 5).
Step 7: Share with Your Audience Writing: Exploring and Using: LO 8 (response and author’s intent – talk about their own texts and the texts of others).
Give the children the opportunity to share their reports with the class. Encourage them to present the report under the different headings. Allow the other children to ask questions and comment about the features of the report that they enjoyed.
Book Talk and Critical Thinking Oral Language: Understanding: LO 5 (vocabulary – use context clues to infer meaning of new phrases).
Idioms
There are examples of idioms in the story. The teacher can re-read the idioms in context while explaining to the children that idioms are phrases that do not mean exactly what the words say. The idioms could then be presented as ‘I wonder’ statements to encourage critical thinking and generate discussion.
• I wonder what ‘Let’s jet off’ means. The children take turns giving their opinions about the meaning of the phrases.
