Discuss the title The Week Before Christmas. Chat with the children about the things they do with their families to prepare for Christmas: • putting up the tree • writing Santa letters • buying presents • writing and sending Christmas cards • visiting Santa.
Discuss the cover page. • Who do you see on the cover page? • What is happening? • Predict what will happen in the story.
Brainstorm Reading: Exploring and Using: LO 9 (comprehension – make predictions about the text using the title and cover page).
Pair chat In pairs, the children brainstorm together to predict what might happen in the story based on the cover.
Modified Activity (for less able pupils) Provide less able pupils with sentence starters.
Extension Activity (for more able pupils) Encourage more able pupils to add more detail, justify their answers and use more complex sentences.
