Poem: ‘Do You Like Summer?’ This section provides guidance and ideas to support the teaching of a poem for this unit.
‘Do You Like Summer?’ Do you like summer? I sure do! Come to the beach, I’ll swim with you. Let’s hunt for seashells Along the shore. The beach in summer Is great to explore! Bring a spade and a bucket And give me a hand, We’ll build a castle In the sand. Do you like summer? I sure do! Come to the beach, I’ll play with you!
Poetry Presentation
Reading: Understanding: LO 4 (phonological and phonemic awareness – clap the rhythm of the rhyme and recognise rhyming words).
Introduce the poem to the children by reading the title. Allow them time to discuss their thoughts about the title. As you recite the poem, draw their attention to the rhythm and the beat by clapping or tapping. Draw attention to the rhyming words by highlighting them as you recite. Remind them that rhythm and rhyme make a poem musical.
Reciting the Poem Voice Jar
Oral Language: Exploring and Using: LO 10 (playful and creative use of language – listen and respond to the rhyme).
Encourage the children to recite the rhyme until they are familiar with the words using the ‘Voice Jar’. The children pick an emotion card (see downloadable materials for Unit 1) from a jar labelled ‘Voice Jar’. The children recite the rhyme using that voice and expression.
