Area 2: Construction
The children could design, draw the blue prints for and construct a new children’s hospital with everything that children might need and want. They could include examination rooms, wards, a waiting room, operation theatre, an X-ray department and ambulance bays. They could also add their own features or areas such as a playroom, a soft-play area, a school room, ice cream shop or whatever they desire. They could plan and build roads and routes that the ambulance could take to the hospital.
Area 3: Art
Junk art: Children could engage in a group junk art project, using a large box to create an ambulance. Teacher assistance would be required for cutting the front of the box out so that the children may sit into the ambulance. The box could be covered in white paper, paper plates painted black for wheels, a red cross attached, another smaller box attached for a siren and large signs/labels attached reading ‘Ambulance’.
Art: Create X-ray pictures using black sugar paper, chalk and a range of the following: pasta shapes, matchsticks, cotton buds, white straws and glue. The children could draw around their hand, arm or foot using white chalk and use the mentioned materials to create the bones. Sample X-ray pictures are supplied and may be used as a visual stimulus.
Area 4: Sensory Play
Sand play table: The following items could be supplied at the sand play table: bottles and containers of various sizes (some could be opaque and some non-transparent). Children could wear white shirts or coats and pretend to work as pharmacists filling out prescriptions.
• Children can fill and empty containers/fill containers using spoons/fill from one container to another to see which is bigger or smaller.
• Children can find and fill containers that hold nearly the same amount and containers that hold the same amount but are different shapes.
• A balance can be added to the sand tray and children can be encouraged to order containers from those that hold the least to the most.
• The following language can be introduced and developed: full, empty, need more or less, heavy, light, big, small, biggest, smallest, heaviest, lightest.
Playdough
Using playdough and the playdough skeleton mat provided (see downloadable Aistear materials for this unit), the children could make the skeleton for inside the body. They might like to include some of the organs such as the heart and the brain.
Area 5: Small World
Supply a commercially produced hospital and ambulance set, such as the Playmobil Hospital set. Alternatively, a doll’s house can be simply transformed with a cardboard sign reading ‘Hospital’, placing beds in one room to act as a ward, chairs and tables in another room to act as a waiting room, a table in a room on its own to act as a surgery. A car mat may also be incorporated: mark out car park spaces and numbers, an ambulance bay, bus stop, etc. White crêpe paper or tissue can act as suitable bed clothes and can be taped around figures to indicate doctors and nurses.
Children can engage in free play, acting out various scenarios: admitting a patient to hospital, taking a patient by ambulance to hospital, a doctor doing their ward rounds, a patient needing surgery, friends and family visiting someone in hospital.
