Summary Writing
Being able to write a summary – of a book, a play, a movie or anything at all – is an important skill. A book review will often contain a short summary. A good summary is succinct (to the point). It does not tell the reader/listener every detail but it will give a good overall description of what the book is about (without giving away any plot points) and perhaps outline who the main characters are. A summary does not contain the reader’s opinion.
An eff ective book summary will: ❍ list the title and author
❍ mention the names of the main characters
❍ sum up the plot in two or three sentences
❍ describe the main problem/ source of confl ict, without revealing any crucial information (what is called a ‘spoiler’).
Read Andrew’s review again and pick out which parts summarise the story and which parts contain his opinion.
